Unique Sydney: Darling Harbour Nightlife
By:Richard Greaves

Centuries ago before the birth of Sydney, the area that is now Darling Harbour, was known as umbalong, an Aboriginal word meaning 'meeting place'. After emerging as a leading industrial port and falling into decline, Darling Harbour has again become a meeting place, this time for people out on the town in search of a good time.

If you're heading off for a roistering night out in Darling Harbour, the best way to arrive is by ferry from Circular Quay. The beauty of the Harbour and the city skyline is sure to get you in the mood for a night of wining and romance. Then you can cruise through the array of pubs, clubs and bars along the Darling Harbour waterfront in search of that special place. The harbour view really adds to the great ambiance of the local nightspots to create a stunning venue for a night's enjoyment. But where to go?

Take you pick from an abundance of spots including the Pier 26 Bar, the Pontoon Bar, the Wallaby Bar or the Loft. A firm favourite for local revellers is the Cargo Bar. It offers a downstairs pub style setting and a more sophisticated upper floor lounge with dextrous bartenders.

Another jumping place in Darling Harbour is Cockle Bay Wharf which is home to many bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. The happening place of the moment changes regularly so it's best to stroll around until you come to a place that suits you mood.

Or check out the local tourist rags to find something that appeals. For example, is Latin dance is your thing, Club Salsa at The Watershed opens up at 10pm on Fridays and Salsa Caliente at the Docks Hotel every Sunday.

If shows are your thing, head for the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Harbour Street. It's one of Australia's biggest indoor entertainment venues with regular performances by leading local and international entertainers. It's the place to catch concerts, family shows and sporting events. It's the home stadium for the Sydney Kings basketball team. Check online or one of Sydney's tourist magazines to find out who's performing.

Recent artists performing at the Sydney Entertainment Centre have included Linkin Park, Coldplay, Metallica, Celine Dion, and Radiohead. The centre also hosts international circuses and shows such as Disney on Ice.

And then if you're feeling lucky, head for Star City, the only casino in New South Wales. It's open round the clock and other the abundant tables features its massive TAB lounge and sports bar.

If you're in the mood to chance things, Star City offers the choice of 1500 slot machines and 200 gaming tables offering everything from blackjack, roulette and craps to big wheel and pontoon.

Other than gambling, Star City offers entertainment at the Lyric and Showroom Theatres, bars and restaurants, hotels and apartments, banqueting and conferencing.

Its proximity to Sydney and abundance of nightlife venues make Darling Harbour everyone's favourite party spot especially on weekends. Or better still, take your pick of the many Darling Harbour hotels and base yourself there. You'll find plenty to do in the day, too, and downtown Sydney is just a hop away.
