Dr Norman

There are two basic principles for learning vocabulary efficiently and effectively.

1. Seeing and hearing words in use
The more real English that you see and hear on a daily basis, the more your vocabulary will grow. However, the key to learning this vocabulary efficiently is identifying materials that are at the right level and length.

2. Trying words out
Hearing and seeing words is just the start of getting a working vocabulary. To learn effectively, you need to
• Know how to use these new words,
• Be able to recall the right words at the right times
• Use new words correctly with other words

To find practical suggestions on how to use these principles and how to select materials at the right level, see my blog article and my video on this topic at https://www.advancedenglishlearning.com/ESL-English-Learning-Blog

Putting these suggestions into practice is worth it! As your vocabulary grows, you will find that your reading and listening will become easier, your writing and speaking will improve and, for those studying in English, your academic scores will grow.
