Further info

The book is a children's textbook focusing on oral and listening skills. The target age is Chinese children between the ages of 11 and 12 years. Ability to read and write simple English sentences is assumed.

The aim is improve the students listening and oral. The focus is mainly on encouraging the students to open up and speak. The activities use the children's imagination and creativity. The secondary aim is to improve pronunciation and vocabulary.

There will be a Teacher's book that will guide the teacher. In the listening part, the teacher can read the text out loud or play the CD. In other activities like stories, the teacher will tell the story (the text is provided in the Teacher's book). The text is not provided in the Student's book because it then becomes a reading exercise and the focus on listening and oral is lost. The teacher will also be quite involved in the games eg. Guess the word - the teacher will say : its small, its round, its red, its sweet, its a fruit and the students will come will the apple answer. The text is provided in the Teacher's book, but the teacher if experienced can wing it.

There will be 20 lessons. [Usually there are 20 days of oral classes per semester in Chinese schools. The aim is to finish one lesson per day.
The lesson can be completed in 2 periods - each period lasting 40 minutes]. A lot of support is given to the students in the beginning of the book where the teacher plays a larger role. Near the end of the book the students take on a bigger role. eg. in the beginning the teacher is speaking in the Guess the Word game, but later on different students will provide the clues.

Each lesson has 6 sections. The first section acclimatizes the student to spoken English, so that the student becomes used to the teacher's and the recorded voices. The second section introduces oral in the form of words, phrases and short sentences. From the third to the fifth section the required spoken lengths become longer. The sixth section is relaxation in the form of games that use oral English. Personally, I have found this pattern to be extremely effective while teaching oral English. Also the lessons are arranged in increasing order of difficulty with much support provided in the beginning and far less support given at the end.

Thanks to everyone for their time and effort. If you further questions, holler,
Sridhar
