If you ever decide to visit India, you don't want to miss out on India's most famous man-made landmark: the mighty Taj Mahal. That means a visit to Agra, home of the centuries-old white marble tomb. But there's more to Agra than just the Taj. Other, perhaps even more impressive, structures await. Luckily, Agra is close to Delhi and a relatively new highway connects the two major cities. Here's how to get there.

Arrive in Delhi, home to the area's largest international airport. This is almost certainly where your journey to Agra will begin. Round-trip economy tickets from the United States to Delhi cost between $800 and $1,500 or more, depending on the time of year and air carrier.

Decide on a bus, train or car to get to Agra. For the really adventurous, a bus is hard to beat, as it provides you with an up-close-and-personal experience with residents and is inexpensive. To take a train, take a cab to the train station and purchase a ticket for Agra. Several trains leave every day for the hometown of the Taj, and prices range from a few dollars for the lowest class of seats to expensive luxury compartments. If a train or a bus won't do it for you, ask your hotel to arrange a car for you to go to Agra. This will be the most expensive option, costing between $80 and $150.

Travel from Delhi to Agra. The trip shouldn't take more than 3 or 4 hours, though the bus option might take several hours more, depending on the number of stops it makes.

Check in at a hotel. Hotels in Agra range from modest accommodations costing $25 per night to large five-star hotels that cost more than $200 per night.

Enjoy the incredible city of Agra. Witnessing the Taj Mahal up close is a given, but don't miss out on the amazing Agra Fort, which affords an unusual view of the Taj in the distance. Take the time to visit Fatepur Sikhri, located about 40 minutes (by cab) outside of town--an abandoned royal city of stone in the middle of the desert.
