Off To New_York
By:HILDEGARD SULLIVANT

New York is one of those cities already so familiar to us thanks to the myriad movies and songs in which it has played its own part over the years that when you step into the busy streets and set yourself among the crowds for the first time, it''s almost like returning somewhere you know well. It is an enchanting, exciting place, and you will fall for it in an instant.

You will doubtless find yourself craning your neck when you first arrive, taking in the sheer wonderment of the skyscrapers almost touching the heavens. However you needn''t merely observe the skyline from the ground: you can take an elevator ride to the summit of the Empire State Building and observe the vista in all its glory.

Catch one of the ferries that regularly depart from Battery Park on the tip of Manhattan and you can go and visit the Statue of Liberty and see it up close, or head to the famous old Ellis Island immigration museum where the first generations of migrant families and communities from across the seas first arrived over a century ago.

If you want to see Manhattan from a different angle, then go along the Brooklyn Bridge. Brooklyn itself is a great location to spend some time eating at one of the cool dining places.

Central Park is another stunning place to visit and while away some time. Though often just as busy and as thriving as the rest of New York, the greenery and the slow pace make it a retreat from the frenetic rush of the city. It serves as the location for all kinds of concerts, and is also home to the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and its very own zoo.

Times Square is another of those spots familiar to many of us even if we haven''t seen it for ourselves. When you find yourself surrounded by the bright video screens and neon lights you will be dazzled, blown away by the colour and energy concentrated in the place. Around the area you''ll find restaurants and theatres to visit too.

Take some time to sit down and enjoy a show on Broadway, where the many theatres always offer spectacular productions. The Lincoln Centre in particular has plenty to offer whenever you may visit. Elsewhere, at the Rockefeller Plaza, you can spend some time wandering around the shops or eating in the midst of the city hubbub.

New York is less a city and more a state of mind, so say its many admirers the world over. A busy, thriving place where something is always happening, you will never forget your visit.
