History of Texas
By:Garik Tate

Texas was first colonized by the French in 1682. The french base was called fort Saint Louis. Though the colony was abandoned in only 3 short years it was because of this base that the Spanish decided that it was time to start claiming territory north of Mexico. The Spanish began to colonize Texas mostly the east side. Though the first wave of colonists from Mexico were abandoned with increased french activity in nearby territories the Spanish began to get serious and established several colonies. In 1779 the first US citizens began to move to Texas.

When Mexico claimed its independence Texas was one of the areas that Mexico controlled. However Texas was very sparsely populated so Mexico tried to get more colonists from the US. So the Mexican government created a controlled immigration system. Soon there were 30,000 immigrants from USA compared to 8,000 native Mexicans. Many of these American immigrants had brought there slaves with them.

It was because of this slavery that Texas separated itself from Mexico in the Texas war for independence. The Alamo is the most famous battle of the Texas war for Independence. The battle of the Alamo was a 13 day siege between 200 Texans and nearly 6000 mexicans. The Mexican army led by Jose de Urrea had already wiped out resistance all along the coast. Though they lost the battle of the Alamo they still won the war as a whole and as an independent nation named themselves the Republic of Texas.

The republic was very successful however it still joined the US and became the 28th state. Part of the reason why they did this is because USA was allowing slavery in its southern states and was also expanding quickly. Texas was one of the states to join the Confederation of State in the civil war however very few battles were fought in Texas.

After the Civil war Texas became very rich due to the massive oil wells found in Texas. The oil boom of Texas started on Spindletop Hill It also became rich from its Timber trade and cotton resources. Though agriculture and ranching were popular in Texas the food industry in Texas began to shrink in World War 2.

Currently Texas is the second biggest country by both population and land. It is a solid republican state and is hugely economically diverse with a powerful Technological base. The name Texas means "friend" in an Indian tongue.
