San Francisco: One Of The Most Famous Cities In The World

San Francisco is a city that is known for its unique beauty and diverse terrain along with the city's incredible ethnic and cultural variety. It is one of the most visited cities anywhere in the world.

The iconic Golden Gate Bridge has been called one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The bridge is not actually painted gold, but an intense red-orange called "International Orange." Crews of 40 painters provide constant touch ups to the bridge's color. A statue of architect Joseph B. Strauss has been placed on the southern observation deck.

A ferry ride to Alcatraz Island for a tour of the famous penitentiary is on many to do lists and for good reason. The illustrious prison is a historical site dedicated to an unusual way to house prisoners. Famous outlaws such as Al Capone, George Kelly and Robert Franklin Stroud were inmates at Alcatraz. It was considered a prison that was impossible to escape from, although, several prisoners tried.

The prestigious University of Berkley offers tours of the forested 178-acre campus. An educated student guides most tours and visitors will discover the school's long term history including student's 1960s involvement in the Free Speech Movement.

The San Francisco Cable Car was created after Andrew Smith Hallidie witnessed a terrible accident involving five horses pulling a heavy load and sliding down a slippery grade to their deaths. Hallidie was inspired to invent the cable car system using suspension bridge technology. It has been in use ever since providing transportation for people to Aquatic Park and Fisherman's Wharf.

The Castro or Upper Market is known as the gay capital of the world. Visitors will appreciate the chic stores and outdoor cafes. The extensive views of the Bay Area will have tourists reaching for their cameras.

Nightlife in San Francisco is boundless and offers entertainment for every traveler to the destination. Couples have locations such as the View Lounge and the Lion Pub to choose from while young singles have the Fillmore and Minx for their amusement.

A visit to a San Francisco Museum is a good way to spend a foggy day. Recommended museums include the ethnic and contemporary M.H. de Young Memorial Museum located in Golden Gate Park. Additionally, the Cable Car Museum will treat patrons to displays about the famous transportation system.

The accredited San Francisco Zoo offers visitors a sightseeing expedition featuring zebras, giraffes, grizzly bears and endangered species such as the Waldrapp Ibis. A kid's zoo has been added to the premises and gives children the opportunity to be hands on with the animals. The zoo is concerned about conservation efforts and encourages visitors to join them in saving endangered creatures.

Another traveler said," It was easy to walk to sightseeing locations and the farmers market has outstanding food, so show up hungry." Sterling from New York City stated," The Victorian House was tour was excellent with great history and a nice walk."
