New York and Sports, a Match Made in Heaven
By:Gaizka Pujana

In fact, some of the most famous sporting structures of all time are also in NYC.

The original New York Yankees, as well as the first Yankee Stadium were part of New York City. It was home to the New York Yankees ball team from the inception in 1923 up until 2008 when the Yankees moved to their new home sporting arena.

Ebbets was, until 1957, the home of the Brooklyn Dodgers until 1957. It was torn to the ground in 1960. The New York Giants also have a home base in NYC. Polo Grounds, located in Northern Harlem was the home base for this major league team until 1957. That ground was torn down in 1964 and the Mets, who had played at Shea Stadium moved to Citi Field in 2009.

Madison Square Gardens, sitting high above Pennsylvania Station, located in Manhattan is the fourth place to use that nomenclature. The first two were very near to Madison Square, which is what gave them the name. Mid town Manhattan was home to it, and the third one was located at Eighth Avenue.

NYC is not only home to some of the most famous baseball players of all time, but also, for several years was host to other sporting events too. In 1996 the World Cup of Hockey was played here and in 1998, the Goodwill Games. 2005 saw it bidding to play host to the 2012 Summer Olympics, but NYC, sadly lost out to the city of London.

The New York City area has no less than nine individual teams that are in the North American major league sporting events. Every one of those teams has a home base in NYC, so if you're looking to see sporting events or sports heroes, you can count on NYC to not disappoint you.

The sport that is most widely viewed and most closely followed would have to be baseball. More than ten World Series have been played in NYC with some of them actually played between New York Teams. NYC is one of just four cities that have more than one major league team and it's not infrequent that they will match up against each other.

New York City is home to the New York Jets, the New York Giants, the New York Rangers, and the New York Islanders, the New York Knicks, and the Womens Basketball Association, to round out the many professional sporting teams playing here. Not only will you find theater, movies, culture and famous personalities here, but you'll find sporting events to rival any other city in the world.

New York City is nothing if not a global city, host to marathons, to track and field events, as well as to boxing and wrestling. No matter what kind of sports you're looking for New York will provide it. From boxing to hockey to basketball and football, New York City has it all.
