How to Go Shopping in New York City
By:Collaborator

New York City is one of the most varied places to shop in the world. From large department stores to one-of-a-kind retailers, the city offers something for virtually every taste and budget. During the holidays, from early December through New Year's Day, the city takes on a magical, festive air, with decorations, holiday music and creative store windows.

Make it to Macy's. Macy's Department Store, at 34th and Broadway in Manhattan, is a New York tradition. Built in 1902, the flagship store has nine floors and offers everything from clothing to housewares to beauty products.

Stroll Fifth Avenue. New York's Fifth Avenue, from 42nd Street to Central Park, is home to Sak's, Bergdorf Goodman, the Trump Tower, FAO Schwarz, Steuben Glass, Tiffany's and dozens of small, high-end retailers. Even if you can't afford to buy, it's fun to window shop.

Explore SoHo. After pricey uptown shopping, take a trip to SoHo, between Houston and Canal Streets. The neighborhood is lined with interesting cast-iron buildings, art galleries, small cafes and eateries, and fashion boutiques. Most of the shopping is centered around Prince Street, Spring Street and Broadway.

Visit New York's Upper West Side. Located on the west side of Central Park above 59th Street, it's filled with brownstones, small restaurants and delis and unique retailers. Among them are Zabar's Gourmet Market and H&H Bagels.

Remember the outlets. Even Manhattan has its share of bargains, if you know where to look. Try Loehmann's, where prices get lower the longer the item is in the store, at Seventh Avenue near 17th Street in Chelsea; Syms, the Park Avenue store that offers designer names at a discount; and Gabay's Outlet, on First Avenue near 17th Street.

Delight in the holiday displays. Christmas time in New York City is magical, with twinkling lights, the giant UNICEF snowflake on 57th Street and the unique department store holiday window displays.
