Activities in Venice, California
By:Nilsia Cadena

Venice, California, is a destination recognized around the world. Many movies have been shot in Venice, including Keanu Reeves' "Speed" and Edward Norton's "American History X." The sun, the artistic culture and the eclectic lifestyle offer as many things to do as there are grains of sand on its famous beach. Explore this Southern California playground and enjoy all that it has to offer.

Surf Sun and Sand
Don't miss Venice Beach, which offers a myriad of attractions. Bring a towel, lie on the sand, soak up sun, swim in the ocean and take advantage of the outdoor showers to rinse off. Rent a surfboard and dive in or take lessons on how to ride the waves.

The Street Beat
The Venice Boardwalk is an excellent opportunity for people watching and interacting with characters you won't see anywhere else. Meet local legend street performers who rollerskate while playing guitar, use puppets and do acrobatics to Calypso music. Walk by the bodybuilders at Muscle Beach, or shoot some hoops on the basketball courts where many NBA players sharpened their skills in street games. Play volleyball or handball out in the sunshine. Rent some wheels; try a bike, skates or rollerblades and glide down the scenic, palm-tree-lined path that runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean. Dance to the Venice drum circle that happens after sunset.

A Walking Wonderland
Venice has many destinations that are accessible by foot. Abbot Kinney Boulevard is home to over 30 restaurants and bars that are as diverse as the clientele. Shop for clothes and unique gifts, or visit a spa. Walk around through the Venice canals, modeled after the waterways in Venice, Italy. Explore the arts at Beyond Baroque, a literary arts center that is also a bookstore; they host events such as readings, screenings and free writers' workshops. Try your swing on the greens of LA Golf Academy or at Penmar Golf Club. Investigate some of Venice's art galleries. You will find a wide range of things to look at including furniture design, jewelry, installations, sculptures and paintings. Attend a reception or an event.

Fun For Kids
Venice is a playground for kids and adults.

Use websites like ActivityTree.com to find drama classes, sailing, skateboarding lessons, dance lessons and art classes for kids that are happening in Venice year-round. Look up events for kids and teens at the Venice Public Library like story time, magic shows and yoga for kids. Take your kids to one of the many events held at 826LA, a non-profit writing and tutoring center for 6- to 18-year-olds. They have concerts and food events with games and performances.
