Nowadays it is extremely difficult to find a decent school or university here. Even the so-called "reputable" universities in China are becoming a joke!

Familiarity breeds contempt is an old adage that applies in China, in my view. I have been here in China since the early 90's, and have experienced the gradual but noticeable worsening of the way foreign teachers are treated. We aren't mysterious to the Chinese any more, and what's more, many regard English as less important globally than they used to.

Another observation is that an FT in a big school with many fellow FTs is in a less favorable environment than an FT in a small school as regards treatment by the Chinese hierarchy. Also, in a key university here with many Chinese staff, most of them are snobs and yes-men, and the students tend to have an entitlement mentality problem.

Finally, the joke you mention is of course a bad one. That said, I should remind you that it takes two to tango, and many foreigners who travel to China to teach, become very unhappy here fast as they are unable to adjust!
