TD recommends maya, I have tested it thoroughly and it works just fine, but as my laptop is a couple of years old, I use the xfce environment as it uses less resources.

Hallo
You're right, many different flavours of Linux, some need you to do command-lines and others like Ubuntu, Mint, you can use out of the box. Ubuntu is excellent if you don't mind the fixed-launcher. Your girlfriend probably finds that and the lack of desktop short-cuts too broad to bear. Once Linux Mint 13 is set up she won't find that alien if used to Windows.

Which Linux ? There are a lot of different flavors.
I just upgraded my other laptop to Ubuntu 12.4 because the older version stopped working just because my battery is dead. This was after an automatic patch update. The damn boot process came to a permanent end at the battery check. I know it's dead! That's why I have it plugged in to line power!
I only use Windoze because the girlfriend is easily confused (business school degree).
