Go With The Flow
By:Amanda Harvey

To go with the flow means to stop trying to swim against the tide of life circumstances and change. It is possible to swim upstream of course, but it is exhausting!

We go against the tide when we try to fight reality, and resist change. Change is going to happen, whether you like it or not. Struggling against the changes life brings is not going to achieve anything but frustration and stress.

Going with the flow enables us to become fluid and flexible. Taking on a free-flowing attitude allows us to be like water. Water is the most powerful substance, able to wear away the hardest of obstacles and to pass through seemingly impassable places.

Being rigid in our beliefs and inflexible in our attitudes means we are unable to flow with life. If we do not bend, we are likely to break.
The best way to not only survive but thrive regardless of the changes and challenges life brings is to develop an ability to flow with the tide.

This doesn't mean that you have to allow yourself to be swept in directions that are not in line with your goals and desires. It is possible and desirable to steer your own course, within the general direction of the flowing tide. It is just not smart or productive to try and row your little raft against the strong current of life. That is a sure way to get shipwrecked!

When you are swimming in relatively calm waters, there are many choices you can take without fighting the natural flow of the universe. You can relax, lie back and float for a while- gaze up at the blue sky and swirling clouds and just enjoy, letting the gentle current carry you forward. You could power through the waters towards your goals, or you could take a relaxed and leisurely swim, slowly moving in the direction you desire.

Just because those around you are all using breaststroke doesn't mean you have to do the same. Feel free to try backstroke or freestyle if that is what suits you.

Going with the flow doesn't mean giving up, giving in, or being swept along to places you don't want to go. It just means accepting that there are certain currents in life that are pointless to try and fight. Fighting will only frustrate and exhaust you.

Save your energy for the ways that is can be useful, and stop wasting it on resisting the inevitable. You will feel relieved, relaxed, and able to calmly and capably navigate the swirls and eddies of life when you have accepted that life is all about going with the flow. It is also much easier to enjoy the journey and adventure of life when you give up the struggle and accept and embrace reality.

We may not know where life will take us, but we can trust that wherever it may be will have the strength and stamina to stay afloat. Every turn of the tide offers us opportunities for learning, growth, and adventure, so go with the flow and enjoy!
