Why Did the French Build the Eiffel Tower?
By:Kenny Leones

The Eiffel Tower is one of the grandest structures in the world. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is one of the popular landmarks you can visit in France. This is a structure that rises up to three hundred meters. It was finished before the 20th century. It is taller than the Washington Monument. People today have often asked the question, why was the Eiffel Tower built.

1. The first possible answer to the question why was the Tower built is because France wanted to have a symbol for the World Exhibition they were holding in 1889. This exhibition was also a celebration of the revolution of France. One of the architects who submitted a design was Gustave Eiffel. Many people admired his design. The tower was meant only for the exhibition however that plan was discarded because it became France's beautiful tower.

Before the Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889, there were several people who protested on its construction because they feared it would not be apt for the image of Paris. Today however it is a totally different story because people come to France to see this tower as well. It was named after its main architect, Gustave Eiffel. He also became a popular architect because of the techniques he used for the Eiffel Tower. He also used some of the techniques in creating the framework for the Statue of Liberty.

2. The second possible answer to the question why was the Eiffel Tower built is because France wanted to have the tallest structure in their country. It was the highest structure in the world until 1930, when the Chrysler Building was made.

3. The third possible answer to the question why was the Eiffel Tower built is for the French government to have a tall point where they can conduct experiments for testing inventions. They also needed a high place where they can conduct experiments for testing their radio transmissions. The Eiffel Tower was supposed to have been brought down after the 1889 exposition but that plan was discontinued because the government at that time thought of turning it into a transmission tower.

4. The fourth possible answer to the question why was the Eiffel Tower built because the French government thought that the design of the tower was so unique that it fits the image of France as a forward thinking country. It was a tower unlike any other at that time. It even became controversial because people that time have not seen a tower like that anywhere and purists thought that it would alter the image of France to the world.
