Motivate Teenagers Or the Unemployed - Here's How
By:Pete E Nicholls

Some people are easy to motivate, others more difficult, but perhaps the most difficult people to inspire are teenagers and anyone who is currently unemployed. The best way to motivate them is to try to understand what they are going through, why they shirk their responsibilities, and why they act as they do.

Firstly, it is vital that you don't shout at teenagers. They don't hear loud voices unless they're accompanied by guitars and drums. Try to remember what it was like being a teenager; maybe looking back, you will realize that they are not yet adults, but neither are they children and they soon will be adults.

A good method to communicate with them is to use the tools they are comfortable with. So for example if you wanted them to tidy their room, ask nicely by way of their preferred social networking site. If they are always late for school, send them a text reminder. The tip here is use their language and don't nag!

If someone is out of work (and what could be worse than an out of work teenager?) they may require certain techniques to motivate them back to the workplace. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as just saying "Go out and find a job")

A good idea is to have an honest assessment of their particular skills and what occupations could be available to them. Suggest a target of a number of job applications each week, or better still each day. Practice their interview skills with them and suggest any changes to clothes, manner or body language that might hinder their prospects.

Be honest but constructive, and keep in mind that a positive tone is crucial in order to motivate anyone.
