What Is The Definition Of Astronomy?
By:Kum Martin

The scientific study of all the matter -- energy found in the universe, dealing with their origin, composition, distribution and movements is called astronomy. It is one of the oldest branches of science in the world. In the ancient times, astronomical studies included observation of only the sun, the moon and some of the stars and their constellations visible to the naked eyes. This was before the invention and development of telescope.

Telescope is one of the most crucial inventions in the field of astronomy. It was invented by Galileo Galilei, a Greek astronomer in the year, 1611. It was further developed by many more scientists and astronomers including Sir Isaac Newton which made the instrument more powerful can capable. Due to careful observations and study of all the celestial objects around us, some major discoveries were, and are still being made about our origin, existence and also our future.

Broadly, astronomy is divided into two categories - optical, where it deals with direct photographs of the space and its components; and non-optical, the branch dealing with things like black holes and neuron stars, the visual photographs of which are not yet possible to be taken and are understood by their radioactive activities and energy signals.

Now, there are various branches of astronomy based on the main object it is dealing with. Planetary astronomy (planets), Solar Astronomy (sun), Stellar Astronomy (star), Galactic Astronomy (Milky Way), Extragalactic Astronomy (other galaxies in the universe) and Cosmology (structure of universe) are all parts of the broad field of Astronomy. Some of the supreme contributors to the subject of astronomy include names like Galileo, Newton, Albert Einstein, Edwin Hubble and Stephen Hawking.
