Aztecs - Unsurpassed Fighting Men
By:Pollux Parker

Collectively, Apache is the name given to culturally related tribes of Native Americans in North America whose language is the Southern Athabaskan. Its meaning, derived from several words, makes the origin uncertain: Yavapai word epache, which means people; from the Zuni word apachu, meaning enemy or Quechan word meaning fighting men.

The Apaches come from over the south-eastern Arizona and north-western Mexico. The tribe was warlike and powerful and is constantly in hostility with white men. U.S Armies who came across them saw them to be expert strategists and fierce warriors. The Apaches surrendered in 1886 when the division involved Chiricahuas were exiled to Alabama and Florida and were put to prison. Today, the Apaches reside in reservations in Arizona, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

They are composed of six regional groups namely the Jicarilla-Tinde, Mescalero-Faraon, Chiracahua, Lipan, Kiowa-Gataka and the Western Apache. All of them are famous for their warfare strategy and endurance and at the same time, gentle people who are faithful in their friendship.

Even with their reputations with war tactics and the fear they instilled in the hearts of other Pueblo tribes and later on the Mexican, Spanish and Anglo-American settlers, they still managed to maintain harmonious relations with them. When the Spaniards came with their slave-traders who hunted captives and used them as labourers in mines, the friction gave much heat that the Apache retaliated and raided the Spanish settlements of their livestock, firearms and even their own captives. In battle, they became a legend as it was said that a warrior from the Apache could run 50 miles or so without rest and still be able to travel more swiftly than mounted soldiers.
