Dear Higgins,

I am Cuban and though I am not a musician, I love the music of my country. Your article is really very well-written, you are well-informed. Thank you for your article. But you failed to mention that Rumba has three variations: Guaguanco (very popular, even added by Salsa artists like Ruben Blades in the song Tiburon), Yambu and Columbia, each with different characteristics concerning tempo, dancing, for instance. In the 40s , a very important Cuban conga player, together with Dizzy Gillespie blended Rumba with Bebop. Besides, "Son" has been the most important component used in Salsa for its particular clave. For that reason many (not to say most) Salsa artists declare that there is no such thing like Salsa. It is only Cuban music.

Yours, Pablo T. Banguela
