Big Bands of the Sixties

The Sixties was a decade of change. During the Sixties, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, the Vietnam War began and man walked on the moon for the first time ever. The music of the Sixties was a reflection of the political and social climate of the time. Many well-known bands were formed during the sixties.

The Beatles
The Beatles formed in Liverpool, England in 1960. The "Fab Four" launched what is referred to as the "British Invasion" when they arrived at New York's La Guardia Airport on February 7, 1964. The original members John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Ringo Starr (drums, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals) and George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) topped the charts for the first time in the United States with "I want to Hold Your Hand." In April of 1964, the Beatles set a record for simultaneously occupying the top five positions on Billboard's Top Forty. The Beatles charted 20 No. 1 singles in the United states including, "Can't Buy Me Love," and "Hey Jude." The term "Beatlemania" was coined to describe the fan frenzy that emerged with their enormous popularity. On April 10th, 1970, Paul McCartney left the Beatles and the group came to an end. The Beatles were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys originated in Hawthorne California and made their debut in 1961 with the regional hit "Surfin'." Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine gained national recognition as the most popular surf band. Their first single to place in the top ten of the Billboard Top Forty was "Surfin' USA." They would go on to make multiple No. 1 singles including "I Get Around" and "Help Me Rhonda." Popular Beach Boy songs include "Good Vibrations," "California Girls" and "Wouldn't it Be Nice." The Beach Boys continued to make music through the seventies and eighties. In 1995, Brian and Mike released a remake album titled "Stars and Stripes, Vol. 1" with country stars singing the leads.

The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones, also known as "The World's Greatest Rock Band," formed in 1962 in London, England and are still together in 2010. The Stones are a hard rock band with roots in electric blues. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, bassist Dick Taylor, drummer Mick Avory, and keyboardist Ian Stewart performed for the first time publicly in July of 1962. In 1965, the Rolling Stones appeared on the American music scene, releasing two hit singles; "The Last Time" and "(I can't get no) Satisfaction." In 2005, for the first time in a decade, the Stones released a studio album with new material titled "A Bigger Bang."

The Supremes
Hailing from Detroit's Brewster housing project, the Supremes would rise from poverty to become the most popular female group of the sixties. The original members were Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson. They were known for there smooth, polished sound and often referred to as Motown's sweethearts. They released their first hit, "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" in early 1964. In June of 1965, the group set a record for the most consecutive Number One hits with "Back in My Arms Again," Where Did Our Love Go," "Baby Love," "Come See About Me" and "Stop! In the Name of Love.". In June 12, 1977, the Supremes disbanded and retired their name during their final performance at Drury Lane in London. The Supremes were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

The Temptations
The Temptations are best known for their coordinated dance steps and soulful sound. Though the group changed members several times, the Temptations are most commonly known as David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Otis Willams and Melvin Franklin. Some of their popular singles include "My Girl'," "The Way you Do the Things You Do," "I Wish it Would Rain," "Ain't too Proud to Beg," and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone." The Temptations continued to make music into the seventies. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
