The Pros and Cons of Solar Power
By:Kristiana Jones

The declining economy and the recent outrageous fuel costs have renewed the debate surrounding solar power. There are compelling arguments to both sides of the issue, but what has never been in doubt is that solar energy is there for the taking. The question that is before us is how much of our energy needs can be met by solar power alone, and what is will cost.?

Advocates of solar power are very difficult to ignore. They make compelling arguments for the use of solar power. What they often neglect to mention is that the technology for solar power is not advanced enough to make a noticeable dent in our energy needs, or that the equipment needed to harness solar power can be prohibitively expensive.

The other issue that will always haunt solar power is that the sun does not always shine and our ability to store the energy collected from the sun is not advanced enough to the point that it is a practical solution for most people. The other issue that is retarding the growth of solar power is the size of the energy panels that are needed to collect the energy.

For instance, in an average home in Connecticut that uses eight kilowatts of energy per day, the homeowner would need thirteen square feet of solar panels to ensure they would collect enough electricity. The cost of these panels can be up to several thousand dollars. Many homeowners will not be willing to pay for an expensive upgrade as long as electricity is readily available from another source.

What is needed, and oddly enough this is where both advocates and detractors of solar energy agree, is more research and development that will make solar panels a viable option for the average homeowner. There are already some financial incentives in the forms of tax breaks available to people who use solar energy, but at their current levels they do not meet the cost incurred by the homeowner.

The debate about solar energy is one that only time can resolve, but it does seem that time is on the side of those who advocate for the use of solar energy. At some point our natural resources will depleted beyond their ability to provide the world's energy needs. When this happens we will return to the time of the first men to walk the earth and begin to use the sun for our energy needs once again.
