Wind Power Generators
By:Kristiana Jones

A wind power generator is a great way to produce electricity and to save some money in the process. It is important to note that it is unlikely you will be able to meet your energy needs through wind power alone, but if it used in conjunction with solar and electric or gas power it can be a very good way to save a few dollars and become more environmentally friendly as well. According to the United States Department of Energy wind power can produce energy at a cost of six cents per kilowatt hour. This is slightly lower than the price of electricity when purchased from an energy supplier.

Even ardent supporters of wind energy will admit that at this point wind power is best suited for small amounts of energy needs such as camping, work sites, or charging batteries. The main limitation of using a wind power generator is that consumers cannot count on enough windy days to produce all of the energy they will use in a typical day. That is why the portable wind power generator used for camping is fine, but not nearly enough for the average household.

There are many wind farms in the United States which do produce a considerable amount of electricity, but these are collected using huge and expensive pieces of equipment that are not suitable for residential properties. These machines resemble giant propellers set on a pole and are usually built in fairly remote areas as they can be quite noisy. As advances are made in the ways wind energy is collected the noise is expected to drop to more acceptable levels which may allow them to be built closer to residential areas.

There are a few other things you should consider before purchasing a wind power generator. Many local energy companies have restrictions on using wind power generators for extra electricity. Contact your local power supplier and be certain you are allowed to use such a generator before buying an expensive piece of equipment. These generators often have to be placed above surrounding buildings which may be in violation of local building codes.

The technology behind wind power generators is not yet there to make them a reliable alternative to electricity that is purchased from the local power company. However, if you are able to supplement the energy you purchase with energy you can collect using a wind power generator you will save some money in the long run and decrease your carbon footprint.
