About Poetry
By:Ava Martin

Poetry refers to a form of literary art, where the language is used for rendering its artistic and reminiscent qualities in accordance with its actual meaning. As it is, poetry can be available in several forms, such as independently written, as discrete poems, or simply in conjunction with other art forms, such as in poetic drama, hymns or lyrics.

Poetry carries a long history behind it. The very first attempts at defining poetry, used to focus on the uses of speech in drama, song, as well as comedy. However, the later attempts focused on characteristics such as repetition, as well as verse form and rhyme. It also focused on the aesthetics which was a prominent feature distinguishing poetry from prose. As it is, with the onset of mid-20th century, poetry has been more or less defined as a basic creative act by way of using language.

Most of the times, different forms of poetry are synonymous to their particular cultures, as well as genres. As it is, they reply to the features of the language in which the poet writes. Now, most readers of poetry regard it to be a collection of verses, which are of rhyming nature. The lines are of regular length and consist of ample dose of wit. However, this is not true and the traditional lines that differentiated poetry from prose have been blurred as new age poets delve into broader perspectives, leading to a number of experimentations in poetry.

Quite often, poetry uses particular forms and styles to suggest at substitute meanings in the words. It has also been used for evoking emotional, as well as sensual responses. Several tools like onomatopoeia, assonance, as well as rhythm have been effectively used, to generate musical or incantatory effects. With deft usage of symbolism, ambiguity and irony, along with other elements of poetry, several wonderful pices of work were generated. Many of these works were churned in a way, to suggest several interpretations.

Many people believe that most of the modern poetry of British and American origin, is to a large extent a judge of poetic tradition. As it is, British poets have used it as a tool for analyzing and testing the waters of euphony. Many a times, poets would gather inspiration from mode, technique and contents from diverse cultures and languages.

Over the ages, metaphor, simile and metonymy, have been effectively used, to create a feeling of resonance between the otherwise separate metaphors. It has been efficient in peeling over layers of manifestations, as well as meanings and formation of links, which have earlier not been perceived. Several kinds of resonance might show, in between individual verses, as in their patterns of rhyming, as well as rhythm.

From ancient works, like the Indian Vedas (1700-1200 BC) and Zoroaster's Gathas (1200-900 BC) to the Odyssey (800-675 BC), poetry has long been with us. With the passage of time, it has undergone several changes and evolution, in regard to styles, techniques and methods; and is there to stay, till the end of days.
