10 Ways You Can Make a Difference Today
By:Jennifer Carpenter

Almost everybody would like to do more to help others but it's so hard to find the time or money to donate. Well here are 10 different ways you can change a little piece of the world today without spending a lot of time or breaking the bank.

Bring flowers to an elderly neighbor - Fresh flowers provide a happiness boost to anyone's day.

Pick up litter along the road - Before your next walk, grab a bag and pick up the trash along the road while you stroll.

Send a note of appreciation - The brave men and women who work for the police and fire department deserve our gratitude. Send a little thank you not or card to show your appreciation.

Babysit for a single parent - Being a single parent is a daunting task. Offer to babysit for a single parent who could really use a break.

Become an email pen pal - There are loads of individuals out there that could use a friend. Kids in juvenile detentions centers, women in prison or men in rehabilitation centers could all use a person willing to listen through email. Be sure to provide a few words of encouragement on a regular basis.

Write or email you local legislator - Let the politicians in your area know how you feel about the job they are doing and what you wish you could see being done.

Mentor or Tutor a student at a local school - Kids of all ages need to know that they matter. By offering to mentor or tutor for free at the local school, you'll be making a real difference in the life of a child.

Give a tomato plant to someone - If you know someone who is unable to garden and loves fresh produce, you can give them a tomato plant, already planted in a pot, and placed in a sunny spot in their home. They will enjoy up to five pounds of tomatoes from that one plant.

Pay the tab for the car or person behind you - The next time you pay for your coffee of your toll, pay for the person or car behind you as well. This small act of kindness has a tendency to make a big impact.

Compliment the people who serve you today - Find something nice to say to every service person that crosses your path today. Tell the cashier that she has a nice smile or thank the guy at the bank for providing such friendly service.

It isn't always the big actions that make the only difference, many times the small acts that are done with real compassion that change the world.
