Escalator Safety Tips
By:Joseph Devine

We're halfway through summer now, and it's officially gotten hot. A lot of people are spending more and more time indoors: at malls, in movie theaters, at museums. People are looking for activities they can do in the comfort of air-conditioning. And if you're inside these large buildings, chances are you spend a surprising amount of time on escalators. You probably don't even think about it, but escalators have the potential to be quite dangerous.

Because of the continuous motion and the motor that powers it, the escalator can be quite dangerous. Serious injuries can result if you get caught in the mechanism, and they can be especially dangerous for small children who do not realize the need to keep clear of the machine's lip. You can help prevent injury to yourself and others by following a few simple guidelines:

When embarking, make sure to step carefully onto the stairs. Avoid slipping.
If you are standing, stay to the right side of the escalator. If you are walking, walk on the left. It is important to follow this rule, as it can prevent traffic jams on the machine.
Always face forward so that you won't be taken by surprise when the machine ends.
Make sure you keep your feet and hands away from the moving parts. This is especially important when disembarking.
Be especially careful if you have loose clothing, like dresses or long shoe laces. These can be caught in the mechanism, and if they do, you could be seriously injured.
Always wear shoes while riding an escalator.
If you have a lot of luggage or bags, take an elevator rather than ride the escalator. You endanger yourself and others if you're performing a balancing act.

Escalators can be especially dangerous for children, because they may not be able to fully appreciate the potential dangers of the machine. If you're riding with children, make sure that they understand to be careful. Hold their hand if they have a tendency to fidget or engage in horseplay.

If you are injured in an escalator, it could be due to a design flaw or a malfunction due to negligence on the part of the management. You may want to consider hiring a personal injury lawyer to represent you and help you get the compensation you deserve.
