Short Stories for Teachers

April Fools
By:Michael Mcshea

Winter's shadow is cast no more
upon this treasured land.

Green through brown crust earth
shoots up with demon drive
to capture a breath of life.
-
Solemn no more do winds chime
through the bare towers of stick.

Full is the music
that brings a sigh
for joy is fully installed
by brook and mount
in awe.
-
Some think the earth
is more than this.

But pity such thoughts
in time lost,
that do not hear
simple words echoed
in throat of sweet bird's call.
-
Today is April,
tomorrow may,
bring to us
another day. -

(I thought I was immune from any April fool's pranks this year. I had no plans to go anywhere.

The day started with a knock at the door. There was an expressy mail type package on my doorstep. They apparently don't stop and ask for signatures anymore. I looked it over and opened it. Why some important delivery to me from someone in Texas? There was a cashier's check inside. Wow!

Who would send me a check? Who died and forgot to leave their lawyer the bulk of their estate? Nice chump change though I must say in retrospect.

An April's fool joke? Perhaps, but why so elaborate?

I will not go further into my temporarily being a fool but the check was a phony and it was an elaborate, common scam. Scope it out on Internet sites for yourself.

Anyway, I got out of the house among other things and although the weather was quite drizzly, I got some fresh air and remembered this very old poem.

Happy arrival of April from this dumb fool!
