How to Use Technology in a Secondary Classroom
By:Cynthia Measom

As technology continues to advance and people reach out to embrace its wonders, the classroom is a platform to teach students how to use technology wisely and in a way that benefits their purposes. Not only can the incorporation of technology simplify certain tasks for a teacher, it can also assist in the learning process for students. From teacher record-keeping to student-created assignments, there are many ways to use technology in a secondary classroom.

Decide which tasks you can adapt to include or expand the use of technology. For instance, make a spreadsheet and create lesson plans that you can post online or print out to post in your classroom. Teach with a Smart Board or connect your computer to a projector and take students on a virtual field trip that supports your current lesson plans.

Encourage the use of technology among your students. Talk to your school's technology director and ask about creating a teacher website. Post homework assignments, links to relevant websites and classroom news on the site for your students and their parents. Post the URL in the classroom so its always available.

Have students create a summary of their research paper by designing a PowerPoint presentation, complete with relevant pictures. Or ask them to create a magazine based on their research paper by utilizing Publisher software. Assign a web quest to the students, based on your current curriculum, and have them complete the tasks online. Allow them to create a photo essay about their life, complete with captions via PhotoShop or Publisher.
