I would say your CELTA teacher has a slight issue; either that or a chip on their shoulder. Perhaps they have no sense of humour themself?
Humour is always welcome in a TEFL class and as long as no one is getting hurt (i.e. you're not picking on a student, being racist, etc) it's fine. In this case no one is the butt of the joke and I could see myself saying a pretty similar thing. And I'm British.
For the sake of the course keep your humour to yourself, but once you're out in the real world, let it rip! Your students will love it.
