What is this certificate?

This prestigious certificate is the ideal qualification for those who want to start English language teaching. It is also suitable for people who want a career break or change and for those already teaching English who have no formal qualifications. Awarded by Cambridge ESOL, part of the world-famous University of Cambridge, the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) certificate opens a new world of exhilarating teaching opportunities.

Who should take it?

Anyone seeking to start English-as-a-Second Language teaching anywhere in the world should seek a CELTA certificate. This credential is suitable for people who are looking for a new career or for those already teaching English without formal qualifications. You do not have to be a native English speaker to enroll in the CELTA course. Demonstrated English proficiency allows you to be considered for admission.

What is the curriculum?

The CELTA program is a 4-week course, with 120 contact hours. There are also an additional 80 learning hours devoted to pre-course preparation and tasks, on course reading and research, assignment writing, lesson preparation and record keeping.

Teaching preparation is included in the curriculum and entails:

Working in small groups with a maximum of five other trainee teachers

Tutor-led instruction on preparing lesson plans

Practice teaching where you will teach a total of six hours of classroom lessons to at least two different levels of language learners

ELS/Seattle is one of just eleven CELTA certificate program locations in the USA, one of four on the West Coast and the only location in the Pacific Northwest – right in the heart of downtown Seattle.

Admission Requirements

20 years of age or older

High school diploma or equivalent

Competency in both written and spoken English

Pass pre-course language evaluation task and a 60-minute interview

Non-native English speakers must submit a TOEFL® score of 79 or IELTSTM band 6.5. These requirements may be waived at the discretion of the CELTA director, based on the candidate’s oral interview.
