Explore new opportunities on a different scale

Working as an IELTS Examiner for the British Council in China gives you the chance to explore far more than your skills and abilities. With flexible or full-time fixed term contracts that are renewable based on performance, we offer you the scope and opportunity to discover every aspect of Chinese culture, while assessing written and spoken English skills.

Your role

Based at one of our British Council offices in Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou or Shanghai, you'll travel to a variety of locations across China to assess candidates in their use of English. This can involve long-distance journeys and extended stays away from your base, so well give you plenty of help with travel arrangements, hotel bookings and support if you get delayed. You'll also be able to plan your own downtime, so you can explore China around each assignment.

What we offer

We aim to be a supportive employer and offer two contract options. You can choose a standard full-time contract, or our unique flexible contract that involves working at least six days a month, with extensive opportunities to boost your income by working additional days each month. This flexible approach puts you in control, enabling you to decide when to add to your earnings and when to feed your sense of adventure - to this end, we also offer learning support so that you can learn a local language in China. We also provide opportunities to progress to Team Leader.

What you will need

• A Bachelor’s Degree
• A relevant TESL/TEFL qualification (Cambridge CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL or equivalent) and at least three years of teaching English as a second language to adults.
• A flexible attitude and a self-starter.
• You don’t mind heavy travel throughout China by plane, train and bus.
• Knowledge of Mandarin is not required but will be useful. There will also be opportunities to learn Mandarin if you wish to.
