Alexander von Humboldt German International School is an independent private school with an enriched science and arts program from Preschool through Elementary and High School. A German background is not a prerequisite – AvH welcomes students of dozens of nationalities. Non-German-speakers are encouraged to enroll in preschool, where children acquire a second (or third) language easily through our program.

The school was founded in 1980. Belonging to a worldwide network of 117 German Schools Abroad, AvH uses a German curriculum , which meets all Canadian (Quebec) standards. Teachers at AvH not only teach three languages, they teach IN three languages. While the German language has precedence in the early years, French and English take on increasing importance in the higher grades. In provincial high school exams, AvH students consistently rank near the top.

Our trilingual graduates are usually accepted at the CEGEP (Quebec’s junior college) of their choice, where most earn places on the Dean’s List or Honour Roll. Almost all go on to Canadian, American, or European universities. Soon, AvH students will have the opportunity to complete Grade 12 and earn the German International Abitur (IA). This internationally recognized diploma enables students to apply to universities worldwide, directly from high school.

Our friendly, multicultural environment supports a free and democratic value system which promotes the natural curiosity and open-mindedness of children and teens. The cultural richness of our student body benefits the school atmosphere immensely, and tolerance, empathy, and co-operation are a way of life. From preschool through high school, students are encouraged to explore. With approximately 280 students, the school’s size provides ideal conditions for a trilingual education where personal,
social, and creative development is promoted.
