ESL - Top 10 Reasons To Study ESL at EMU:

ESL students have full degree admission to EMU.

ESL students receive academic credit for each ESL course. Undergraduate students may apply ESL credits to elective course requirements or a minor for graduation. Graduate students may apply ESL credits to their program of study with the permission of their program advisor.

When ESL students are at the 400 or 500 level, they may take courses in their major/program at the same time that they take ESL courses.

ESL students enter their program of study immediately after completing the ESL prerequisites: no exit testing is required.

The ESL program is integrated on the EMU campus: it is not a separate institute.

You may have a better opportunity at getting a job you like because of your ability to communicate with clients in English.

EMU is located in a safe, metropolitan area that offers many things to do.
Learning another language also means learning about another culture: it’s practically impossible to separate the two. Think about what understanding another culture can do for you in the job market and understanding people in general.
You can meet people from all over the world more easily.

Students can save movey and graduate sooner by taking ESL classes for credit.

Students have many opportunities to experience the culture by getting involved in the many student clubs, activities and organizations on campus.

TESOL:
Welcome to Eastern Michigan University (EMU), where ESOL teacher education comes first. We pride ourselves on the rich diversity of our faculty and students, and on our years of experience in ESOL teacher education. Established in 1980, the MA TESOL program has been sending its graduates all over the world. Graduates of the program currently teach in at least 20 different states across U.S.A. and in more than 30 countries and regions worldwide. In the last 27 years, the program has continued its innovation first by adding a TESL Graduate Certificate program for certified teachers in pursuit of the state's ESL endorsement, and recently a new Undergarduate TESOL Minor program. Providing bridges between current research/theory and best practices, these three programs prepare students to become exemplary classroom teachers committed to continued professional development in the TESOL field. We are very proud that graduates of our programs are empowered with the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to teach English to diverse student populations in a variety of educational contexts locally and internationally, in a manner marked by professional innovation and cross cultural sensitivity.

Whether you're a college graduate interested in working with English language learners, an experienced teacher interested in refining your teaching skills, or a career changer interested in doing something more meaningful, we have a program tailored to meet your needs. We welcome inquires. For a caring and practical learning experience of ESOL Teacher education first ... the choice is EMU!
