LIEP Curriculum
The Loyola Intensive English Program offers English instruction at the intermediate and advanced levels. Classes meet five days per week for a total of 20 weekly hours. Instruction focuses on communication skills in spoken and written English as well as a thorough grounding in English grammar. At the beginning of each semester, you will be tested and evaluated for placement at the appropriate level. You may enroll in successive terms until you achieve the necessary English skills to meet your needs.

Intermediate Level: At the intermediate level, you are introduced to all aspects of English through carefully guided class exercises which rapidly improve your listening skills, verbal fluency, writing skills, and reading comprehension. Audio and video materials, field trips, and cultural activities are designed to increase your language skills so that you can independently participate in U.S. life on campus and in the community.

Advanced Level: The advanced level offers an exciting, integrated, and academically rigorous curriculum. Through a wide range of written assignments and oral presentations, and through discussions, lectures, debates, and dramatizations, you are made thoroughly familiar with U.S. customs and culture.

Loyola Courses for Credit
Intensive English students at the advanced level may qualify to take two LIEP courses for academic credit while enrolled in two other academic classes. An application for admission as an academic student, along with a high school or university transcript, must be submitted to Loyola University.

TOEFL: Measuring Progress
An institutional TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is administered three times a year; at end of the two 15-week sessions and at the end of the eight-week summer session. LIEP also has designed its own writing and speaking tests, which are used along with the TOEFL to measure your progress at all levels.

Certificates and Evaluation Reports
You will receive a certificate and an evaluation report at the end of each session. At midterm, your advisor will meet with you individually to give you a progress report including test scores and written comments by your instructors. You will be given advice on how to further improve your oral/aural and writing skills.

Special Programs for Groups
LIEP also offers specially designed programs for groups from schools, agencies, or other organizations, including international corporations interested in improving the English skills of their employees.
