English schools in the USA and Canada

Colorado - Boulder
School:University of Colorado at Boulder - International English Center

The Intensive English Program offers students from all parts of the world a unique opportunity to learn English in a stimulating academic atmosphere, which is at the same time friendly and welcoming. The year-round program features five eight week long sessions of intensive English as Second Language (ESL) instruction, combined with orientation to university customs, academic preparation, and an introduction to life in the United States. Students are tested on arrival and are placed into classes appropriate to their proficiency in English. Students with little knowledge of English should plan to spend at least one year (five sessions) in the program before entering academic degree study.

Global Business Communication
The Global Business Communication (GBC) program provides executives and managers from companies around the world with practical English language and cross cultural communication training for business purposes. Participants benefit from frequent interaction with English-speaking business professionals. The 16-week program is offered twice a year, starting either in January or in August.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a Certificate in Global Business Communication from the International English Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder. GBC training provides participants with practical, effective English and cross cultural business skills that can be applied immediately in their work.

Evening Classes
The International English Center offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESL) to Boulder residents and visitors. Classes are six weeks in length, offered five times per year. Students should have at least a high school education. Evening classes are integrated skills classes so that students can improve in all skill areas.

ESL for Degree Students (ESLG)
Non-intensive, concurrent ESL credit courses in academic speaking, listening, and writing for degree students and other interested persons.

Special Programs
The IEC regularly works with various groups to provide specialized English and educational experiences. These include business English for corporate clients, English and cultural experiences for university-age groups, teacher training and others. For more information about specialized programs, contact Cathy Murillo, Director, by submitting a question on our contact form or by sending to this address:

Online Offerings
Four noncredit graduate-level writing modules are available online. Each module focuses on a different writing skill or technique requisite for successful work in master's and doctoral degree programs. Instruction is suitable both for graduate students who use English as a second language, as well as for any graduate student who needs to improve his or her writing for course work and thesis writing at the graduate level.
