Academic Preparation
The IEP is first and foremost an academic English Program which aims to offer students the chance to gain a solid foundation for a future career as a student in an English-speaking environment. We use all of the resources of Indiana University’s outstanding campus to prepare you for whatever you will face as a student, whether undergraduate or graduate. We provide opportunities and encourage you to use the world-class libraries, computing facilities and research centers, as well as engage with the superb faculty that make up Indiana University. The IEP is just that: an INTENSIVE program in learning not only the English language, but also general literacy skills and especially academic skills and strategies for coping with academic culture in English speaking classrooms. Expect a challenging yet reasonable amount of work both in class and as homework. Teachers try to make learning fun, but they expect you to feel the demands of university life in the United States.

Activities within the IEP
The IEP offers a number of activities that provide opportunities to practice English outside the classroom. Among the activities and events regularly offered are:
- Reading circle. Each session, students choose a book and meet to discuss it.
- English Table. Students meet weekly to speak English with each other and teachers in the casual setting of a university cafeteria or food court.
- Saturday morning conversation and TOEFL Practice sessions. Students can have a “continental breakfast” while they practice conversation skills or brush up on TOEFL strategies.
- Picnics and trips. Each session the IEP invites students to enjoy a catered picnic or a trip (for instance to King’s Island Theme Park or a day trip to Chicago).
- Conversation Exchange. Interested students are matched with an IU student or Bloomington resident for regular casual conversation.
- Campus Tree Walks. Tours are periodically led to introduce students to the amazing variety of flora on the IU campus, which is one of the most beautiful in the U.S.
- Other unscheduled events. Every session there are additional events for students, including class parties, trips to plays, operas, sporting events and shopping.

We try to offer as many chances to speak English outside of the class as we can.

Activities at Indiana University:
Indiana University is a large university with more than 37,000 students on the Bloomington campus. There are a wide range of activities available to all IU students, including students in the IEP. Among these are:

Sports and Recreation:
Student Recreation and Sports Center (SRSC) - a state-of-the-art sports facility with indoor soccer, basketball, racquetball, squash, and volleyball courts, workout rooms, indoor running track, and an Olympic-size swimming pool.
Intramural and club sports—you can participate in organized team sports either through intramural teams or by joining one of the many sports clubs.
Outdoor pool-during the summer, swim in IU’s Olympic size outdoor pool or practice diving on either springboards or platforms.
Attend basketball, football and other major university sporting events
IMU Outfitters—organizes outdoor adventures: rafting, camping, rock climbing, etc.

Music Scene:
Music school - opera, jazz, and other musical styles. Concerts almost daily in one of the 3 major recital halls or the renowned Musical Arts Center (MAC)
Opera - Bloomington is one of the only cities in the U.S. that offers opera almost every weekend during the academic year.
Early Music Festival

Entertainment:
IU Auditorium Series - Broadway musicals, comedy, dance, and other.
IU Theater - Professional quality student productions of the best of classical and modern comedy, drama and tragedy.
IU Ballet Theater - Three major performances annually.

There are numerous clubs and centers representing different cultural groups which often sponsor public events. See Office of International Services for a current list.
