Texas - Kingsville
School:Texas A & M University-Kingsville (TAMU-K) - Intensive English Program

The mission of the Intensive English Program is to offer, within an English-speaking environment, the training in English language skills which will help participants achieve their academic, personal, and social goals.

The objectives of the IEP, are:

• To train foreign students in oral and written English to a level
sufficient to enter a university degree program and to exit the same program successfully.

• To immerse foreign students in an English-speaking environment which will provide them a full enriched study-abroad program, and

• To focus on the needs and goals of each student in professional and conversational English.

The curriculum of the Intensive English Program features strong academic content and activities in order to prepare prospective students for university programs and to promote their general professional English skills. The areas of conversation, vocabulary, pronunciation, academic listening, note taking, grammar, speech presentation, academic reading, essay writing, and research writing are covered in classroom instruction. The language laboratory programs re-enforce reading comprehension, vocabulary, listening, pronunciation, and conversational skills.

IEP Language Training Only
For degree-seeking students, the IEP provides training in language skill areas necessary for academic success: conversation, lecture note-taking, public speaking, academic and research writing, reading, discussion, and grammar.
IEP Placement Procedures

In-coming students to the Intensive English Program represent diverse backgrounds of experiences and skills in English. The scores achieved indicate the instructional levels at which the students should work, and students are then assigned to homogeneous classes. In the past, class numbers have ranged from two to fifteen, but with an average class size of six students per group.

IEP Bridge Program at the Graduate Level
This program is for graduate students who possess some English skills but have not reached the TOEFL requirement for their designated degree program at A&M-Kingsville. They simultaneously study English in IEP and enroll in selected academic graduate courses. All students in the Bridge Program enroll half time in the IEP and half time in academic courses.
