English schools in the USA and Canada

California - Los Angeles
School:Los Angeles ORT Technical Institute - ESL Programs

English As A Second Language Programs:
The Institute's ESL Program provides you with the language skills necessary to become successful members of America. Our students experience a nurturing learning environment and the best instruction possible.

Our ESL program teaches the survival skills for entering today's job market. Graduates of the ESL Program's intermediate and advanced clusters (and levels) have acquired sufficient English and job related information to successfully begin work

The seven levels of ESL offered at the Institute focus on vocational preparation, socialization skills and functional grammar as the program progresses. At each level, new language skills are studied while the skills learned in prior levels are reinforced with increasingly sophisticated applications of interpersonal communication.

While the program focuses on oral skills, listening, reading, and writing are incorporated into the syllabus of each level. Holidays and issues of living and working in a multicultural society are also covered in increasingly greater depth at each level. Students successfully completing Level 4 are eligible to apply for a Technical Program.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
To be admitted, applicants must be high school graduates or the equivalent. An oral interview and written test determine student placement. As communication is the goal, placement is determined primarily by oral proficiency. Incoming students are properly placed at a level consistent with their language skills.

PROGRAM LENGTH
The ESL Program is divided into three clusters. Each cluster is equal to a total of 36 semester credit hours for 720 clock hours. The Daytime Program is conducted Monday-Thursday for 5 hours a day, and Friday for 4 hours, combining for a total of 24 hours per week.

The Evening Program is conducted Monday-Thursday for 4.5 hours a day, combining for a total of 18 hours per week. ESL Day runs for a duration of 30 weeks and ESL Evening runs for a duration of 40 weeks total.

The cultural aspects of interpersonal communication are a vital part of all clusters in developing your abilities to communicate in our society. Those enrolling in this program will be placed in a cluster, according to their placement test score.

Upon completion of 36 semester credit or 720 clock hour, you will graduate and receive a certificate.

Los Angeles ORT Technical Institute is authorized to enroll students who wish to study with the F-1 or M-1 student visas.
