April is Autism Awareness Month!
By:Rachel Fischer

Light it Up Blue in April

April is quickly approaching and for the last four decades it has been the time of year that has been set aside for autism awareness. April 2nd has also marked World Autism Awareness Day. As advocates for our children it is important to make those around us aware of what autism is and how it is drastically impacting our community.

The Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 88 children are diagnosed with autism in the United States and the numbers are quickly rising. It is also reported that autism is 5 times (1 in 54) more common in boys than girls.

Some early signs or red flags for autism include:

No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter

No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions by nine months

No babbling by 12 months

No back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving by 12 months

No words by 16 months

No meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) by 24 months

Any loss of speech, babbling or social skills at any age

If your child shows any of these early signs, it is advised that you speak with your child's pediatrician about further observation and testing. Early intervention is key in successful treatment for autism.

Those of us that have children with autism know how loving our children are and desire for our children to be accepted for who they are. Our participation in events in April to promote a healthy awareness and understanding of autism. It will also help in ensuring that our children have an accepting environment when they become adults.

Voice4Autism encourages you to get involved in the events being hosted in your community with groups such as Autism Speaks or Autism Society.
