How Do Teachers Design an Overall Lesson Plan for Their Class?
By:Terrance Karter

An overall lesson plan is a schedule for how a lesson will proceed during class. Sometimes, schools have a particular lesson plan format that teachers are asked to follow, but a general lesson plan format usually does the trick. Lesson plans are useful for teachers, substitute teachers, those studying to be teachers, or anyone who wants to design an educational experience for students of any age.

Instructions

1

Begin with an overall topic. This can be the subject you are teaching, such as math, or the general concept, such as "1800s U.S. History."

2

Write a main point for the lesson, which can also include a lesson title. A main point may be "Introduction to Fractions" or "The Historical Significance of the 1870s."

3

Write a set of objectives for the lesson. The objectives should include statements that begin with the students, such as "Students will be able to demonstrate the proper use of fractions" or "Students will understand the major players in 1870s U.S. history." Shoot for somewhere between three and five objectives, although a good lesson plan can have more or fewer.

4

Write a step-by-step process for the lesson, according to what you would like to teach. Include all parts of the lesson in your step-by-step process. Write what you will say to students, how you will demonstrate things to students, and what types of activities or work students will do during the lesson.

5

Add an assessment section onto the end of the lesson. In this section, write down what you will do for students to show that they have fulfilled objectives. Some possible assessments include "Teacher will ask students to verbally repeat information back" or "Students will complete an assignment in the book to show that they understand the lesson."

6

Add a list of materials to your lesson so you know what materials you and the students will need. You can add other extras if you wish, such as a quick statement to preview the next day's lesson, reminders of questions you should ask, or notes to help you remember special accommodations for specific students.
