Eight Ways to Determine If Teaching is it the Right Career For You
By:Mark W. Medley

Teaching does not just end in primary or secondary school, one mistake many of us make when we think of teaching as a profession. It expands to training, in languages and business throughout society, until we reach the highest level of learning - University or College.

Each level is different, as are expectations and your workload. Also qualifications are different as are teaching techniques. However most people agree that it is the aptitude you carry, that depends on which sector of education you are suited to:

The eight points below are perhaps the key to determining which area of education you are suited to:

How do you know if teaching is the right job for you?

1. Can you work with children or teenagers?

2. Do you prefer to work with young Adults or Adults?

3. Do you like working in a rigid, conformist, well organized environment?

4. Do you like working with people?

5. Are you inspired enough by certain subjects, to do research at home?

6. Are you willing to develop ideas and create materials around that subject?

7. Could you sacrifice vacations for training or seminars?

8. Can you deal with a large amount of paperwork, often taking it home?

If numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 are positive, it means you are better suited to teaching in a primary or high school. Demands are high, working hours can be long, and the environment can be rigid and very conformist.

If numbers 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 are answered positively it may mean you are better off working in higher education or training. Where there is more flexibility, less emphasis on conformity, more scope for expanding the curriculum, and more intellectual freedom.

If you answered only one of two or the questions positively, teaching is not for you and it is better to seek another area of employment.

Teaching is a contemptuous profession, but an expanding and rewarding profession in today's age of learning. Choosing the right teaching level, and environment is as important as deciding if you really have the attitude to have a successful teaching career.
