How to Create an ESL Class Curriculum
By:Contributor

ESL is the abbreviation for English as a Second Language. Many schools across the United States are beginning to implement ESL programs and many communities are now offering adult ESL classes. When creating an ESL curriculum, there are some essential elements that you need to include.

1

Add a speaking element. Make sure there are plenty of activities that focus on speaking and pronouncing the words and phrases properly. Speaking activities could include role plays, oral examinations, question and answers, discussions and real life experiences.

2

Include a reading element. There are many situations in life where reading is essential such as applying for a job or reading instructions to assemble something.

3

Incorporate writing into the ESL class curriculum. Include activities such as essay writing, questions, answers and spelling activities. Sometimes, writing for a student in an ESL class is very difficult because they are not used to writing the English letters.

4

Create a comprehension component. Include activities such as questions and answers and responses that teach them to comprehend spoken and written English.

5

Design some examinations and quizzes. You will need to test the student's progress throughout the course.

6

Make some teaching tools such as pictures, worksheets, posters and other things that the teacher could use to teach the lessons.

Tips

Create the lessons so that each one reinforces past lessons. Make them so that they build on each other. Start each lesson easy, then gradually get harder.
