How to Be a Confident Teacher
By:Becky Hawk

Confidence is key to being a successful teacher. A confident teacher generates respect among his students and inspires them to listen and learn from him. Lack of confidence in a teacher is damaging not only to your career, but also to your students' ability and willingness to learn from you. Every teacher should take the time to develop confidence.

1

Know your subject matter. It is important that you keep up in your field and stay a few steps ahead of your students. If you are unsure of your subject matter or unprepared for your lessons, you will neither feel nor seem confident. Carefully prepare and review each lesson in order to boost your own confidence and teach authoritatively.

2

Step outside the box with your teaching on occasion.

Demonstrate your knowledge to your class. Go beyond simple explanations occasionally to show what you know. Don't overwhelm your students, but do show them that you know more about what you are teaching than they do. Use creativity and don't be confined to a mundane, ordinary teaching style.

3

Remember your position. You have been hired to teach because your employer thought you competent for the task. Your position should give you confidence. Don't let your students manipulate you or make you feel inadequate. They must respect you not only for your knowledge, but also for your position's sake.

4

Observe your students. Work to meet their needs and keep them engaged and excited about the subject matter. Successful students will give you confidence as a teacher. If you see areas that need improvement, address them promptly.

5

Your appearance can have an effect on the way you feel as a teacher.

Keep up your physical appearance. If you don't feel good about yourself, this could have an effect on your confidence as a teacher. Dress in a way that makes you feel confident. Lose weight if necessary, or try a fresh haircut. If you are confident in your appearance, this will help you to be confident in your teaching.
