Motivation to Become a Primary Teacher
By:David Koenig

Teaching has a reputation as "the noblest of all professions," but elementary (or primary) school teaching has neither the money nor the prestige alone to fully motivate the teacher, according to educator Katharine Feeny Johnson. Each elementary teacher has her own inspiration that propels her into a successful career.

Pay
Elementary teachers rarely have financial rewards as their main motivation, but the prospect of a stable, well-paid career forms part of their career path. In 2009, the average elementary school teacher in the United States earned an annual salary of $53,150. Salaries may start as low as $31,000, however.

Skills
Some elementary school teachers choose the career because it fits their skills best. They communicate well with young children, have creative ideas for conveying knowledge and have studied the broad range of subjects required at elementary education level

Work Satisfaction
Elementary school teaching involves shaping young people at a time when they learn the skills, thought patterns and knowledge that will affect the course of the rest of their lives. Many teachers find it rewarding to see children learn and grow mentally, morally and spiritually. Knowing they are making a difference pleases teachers who have a compassionate concern for their students.
