How to Teach English in Argentina
By:Collaborator

Teaching English in another country may seem like a huge undertaking, but knowing where to start is the key to a successful experience. English is in high demand in Argentina, and skilled teachers are needed in various parts of the country.

Learn Spanish. It is very important to know enough Spanish, even if you don't have complete mastery of the language yet. When talking to your students, using their language is one of most effective ways to connect to them and provide value to their learning. As you develop as a teacher during your stay, you can take Spanish classes simultaneously while teaching to help you in your Spanish skills. Even if the school or company you are working with does not require you to be knowledgeable in the language, it is still important to learn it to be able to communicate immediately with the students and the community.

Take TESOL classes. Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) classes are part of a teacher education program that you may need in order to be certified as a teacher of a second language. These classes often result in a TESOL certificate or degree that is recognized internationally. Having this may make it easier for you to get a job in Argentina since it is an asset that you can add to your resume.

Volunteer, intern or get a full-time teaching job. You can teach English in Argentina in a number of ways, no matter where you are in life. If you are still in college, check out the study abroad center on your campus since it will have information about the companies that past students have worked with. If you are a mid-career professional, volunteering or getting a full-time job is also possible through language institutes that hire teachers year-round. These companies usually sponsor you and help you through the process of getting visas, credentials and/or work authorizations that are needed in the particular city where you will be staying.

Explore other options to add to your resume or contribute to your income. You don't have to follow the standard format of teaching in a classroom setting, since there are a number of ways you can add versatility to your career as a teacher by teaching adults in other industries. There is a high demand for English not only in education, but also in the business and medical professions. If you are looking for a job that will connect you to a smaller community in a familial setting, you can also sign up with a placement company that will assist you in locating a family who would be your host during your stay.

Participate in cultural activities, gatherings and communities. By immersing yourself into the culture, you will make yourself an invaluable asset which can open new opportunities for you career-wise. Getting acquainted with the Argentinian way of living will also make you a better teacher to your students in terms of connecting with them and their heritage. Latin American culture emphasizes family relationships and camaraderie, so it is important to position yourself as someone who is involved not only in the work but also the community.
