How to Teach English in Israel
By:Lane Cummings

Teaching English is a wonderful way to travel the world and earn an income while you do it. Teaching English is a perfect job for when you want to absorb the day-to-day culture and personality of a foreign city for a while. Native speakers of English are in demand all over the world, including Israel. While the salaries for teachers aren't high in Israel, make sure you bring documentation of your university degree or academic experience. These will be factored as prospective employers calculate your base salary.

Get your TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate or your TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate in Israel. There's no large difference between the types of certification, and either of the certificates are the minimum requisite for a teaching job in a foreign country. While you're not required to be certified to teach English, most schools request that prospective teachers have such certification.

Ask your certification program for help with job placement upon the completion of your certificate. Most of the programs that offer certification are connected to schools where they directly funnel teachers for jobs.

Make a list of schools in the areas of Israel that you would like to work in. Call or drop by, explaining that your are TEFL or TESOL certified, and mention any other teaching experience that you have. Remind them that your certification makes you qualified to teach all levels and types of English classes.

Advertise in the local newspaper. You may need to hire a translator to translate your advertisement into Hebrew, but it will be well worth the cost. The advertisement should generate private students who will pay you more for one-on-one lessons. You can dictate the hours you'd like to teach and your hourly wage.

Look for opportunities in adult education. According to the Jewish Agency, "Israel's booming high-tech industry is essentially an international sector, in which the language of necessity is English. Companies hire individuals or companies to teach their employees on an individual or group basis."
