| Top 5 Ways How Reading Could Help ESL Students to Improve Their Target Language
By:Azari Masili

Reading is one of the most important skills of the Famous Four (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) in language learning. Without knowing how to read, it will be very difficult for students to adapt and absorb the learning especially during reading activities in classroom. Listed below are Top 5 ways on how Reading could help ESL students/ learners in improving the target language.

1. Reading materials are written by those experts in the writing area. ESL students can adapt the same writing style by the professional in their essay in ESL classrooms for example on how to start a good introduction and how to organize important contents.

2. A good reading source is always perfected with smooth flow of sentences and grammar structure. This way student can learn about the rules of grammar itself while reading and may utilize the correct usage in ESL activities for example Speaking and Writing activities related especially.

3. ESL students may use some of the examples or interesting facts stated or repeated in learning materials for their ESL activities. A very resourceful reading material such as English newspapers and magazines may come handy at time.

4. Besides that, ESL students can also utilize related interesting pictures shown in most written materials in helping them in ESL presentations. Most people (including myself) love to see pictures and after all pictures do tell a thousand words.

5. Other than helping themselves, ESL students can also help other ESL learners by referring them to the useful reading materials that they have read. Sharing is caring.
