An English School Involves More Than Just Sitting In A Classroom
By:Cait Adams

Some people think that learning English as a second language is just like going back to school. They don't like the idea of spending too much time sitting in a classroom, thinking it will be boring and difficult.

Although there certainly is some class work involved in attending an English school, you may be surprised to learn that a large amount of your day will also be involved in extracurricular activities outside of the classroom learning environment. These can be at the school itself, out in the community or on trips away at the weekend. When you're choosing the right place to learn English, it's a good idea to find out which schools have group activities as an important part of the learning process.

The human brain can only take in so much classroom learning at a time and researchers know that the best way to learn is to be active during the process and to involve as many of the senses as possible. That's why a good English school will have a language learning timetable with a variety of other activities. This will give students the opportunity to practice their growing English skills in a practical environment where it doesn't even feel like learning.

Learning English through activities which involve fun and adventure - alongside a well run classroom programme - can really enhance your learning and make the whole process of learning a second language so much easier. Although the activities at an English school will probably not be a compulsory part of the learning programme, it's a really good idea to become involved. As well as improving your English and having fun, you'll get the opportunity to socialise with your classmates and make lifelong friends as you enjoy yourselves together.

Some of the activities run by English schools to help students improve their English include sports activities on campus such as soccer, basketball, badminton and tennis. Depending on where your language school is located, you may also get the opportunity to participate in weekend trips where you can be involved in activities that you might not otherwise encounter such as horse riding, skiing, snowboarding, hiking and surfing.

Your English school may also arrange excursions to local places of interest such as farms, tourist venues and sports arenas. These give you the perfect opportunity to use your English language skills and have fun at the same time. Even simple get-togethers with your fellow students over a BBQ or a pot luck dinner will give you the chance to use your newfound English skills in a practical way.
