Why You Should Teach ESL
By:Nepolian Milton

If you like to travel, and are passionate about teaching English, you can consider a career as an ESL teacher. You will get to visit other countries, have the satisfaction of making a difference to the lives of young children there, and develop as a person. Teaching ESL requires special skills, such as patience, openness to experience, and a risk appetite.

Determine which country you would like to teach in. You can search online for the criteria employers there have for this profile. You should also look for sites which provide information on these kinds of jobs. Shortlist two or three which seem informative and register with them so that you get up to date alerts whenever a new job is posted on the site.

Prepare a resume which highlights your achievements so that they seem relevant to a potential employer. For instance, if you have traveled abroad or taught young children before, you should mention details.

Plan a trip to the country you wish to teach in if possible. Visit the school which has a vacancy so that you can see its infrastructure. You may have to be prepared to work with limited resources and funds. Find out what the students should know after they have taken your course so that it is in sync with the annual examination.

In case you feel that you need to incorporate additions to the syllabus, you can discuss these with the administration. Be diplomatic, otherwise they may feel that you are taken on more than you should. Make your classes interesting, so that students are not intimidated by the prospect of learning a foreign language.

Take the time to understand the culture of the place you are teaching in. Read up on local etiquette before you go, and take advice from your friends there. Otherwise, you may unknowingly offend your students if you commit a social gaffe.

Prepare a lesson plan so that you can discuss it with your students, other teachers, and the administration. Your students may find spoken English lessons more useful than written ones, so ensure that you incorporate their feedback in your classes. Otherwise, they may lack in motivation and neglect doing their assignments.

Teaching ESL can be an enriching experience. You may want to do this when you are young and able to travel more easily for a long period of time. Learning is the best way to teach.
