Guidelines for Teaching ESL
By:Monroe Bennett

Teaching ESL can be a rewarding experience, especially if you like to help people. Aiding foreigners in attaining a level of comfort in both written and spoken English can be a satisfying experience. Additionally, you can enjoy travelling to another country to teach ESL. Staying there as a local for many months will be a different experience from that of a tourist.

You can search online for jobs which require teaching ESL. Look for ones in the country in which you would like to teach. You can ask locals, others who are teaching ESL there, or look online for vacancies. Understand what employers are looking for so that you can prepare accordingly.

Prepare a resume which highlights your relevant work experience. In case you have prior experience in teaching children, or you have travelled abroad, you should mention details on your resume. When you are being interviewed, talk in detail about your experience in teaching.

Once you reach the country where you will teach, make an effort to be friendly. It will be appreciated by your students, other teachers, and the school administration. Ask for help if you need it, especially in case you do not know the local language.

Try to learn the language spoken in the country where you will be teaching. This will help you adjust better to your new environment. You can even take the help of your students in increasing your familiarity with the local language.

Prepare a detailed lesson plan and discuss it with the school administration before you start your classes. This will help you understand what the school administration wants taught and how you can teach it.

In case you feel that there are important topics which are not being covered in the syllabus, discuss it with the school administration. You should do so in a diplomatic manner, otherwise you may alienate your employer.

Make lessons fun so that your students look forward to your classes. They should be interactive so that even shy children are forced to participate. This will ensure that they become less self conscious and improve their fluency in English.

Teaching ESL can be a challenge, especially if you are faced with a child who does not want to learn. With patience and understanding you can win even the most obstinate student over. Consider taking the help of another student to make difficult students trust you. Be innovative in your teaching strategies.

Be careful when you apply for an ESL job. You should register with TESall.com so that you get regular updates on jobs available in this field.
