Tips for Creating an ESL Teacher's Lesson Plan
By:Phillipe Smith

As an ESL teacher, it is important that you have prepared your lesson plan for the day. This is because if you attend the class without any preparations, it is most likely that you will lose the interest of your students. At the same time, you might lose your job because people will see you as irresponsible and not a good employee. You should set a good example to your students so that you get to teach them values that they will need later on, instead of just the language you are teaching them.

Especially if you are an online ESL teacher, having a lesson plan is crucial. Imagine logging into your computer and discovering that the person you are talking to does not know what he should tell you. This is only acceptable if you are just friends and you are catching up with your friend. But if you are an ESL teacher, this is a big disappointment. Moreover, there are several students who are really strict with using their time well. If you waste it by not being prepared, you will lose your students.

In order to prepare your lesson plan of the day, here are the things you will need to identify:

Set an objective for the day.

Since you are teaching ESL, you have to set a goal for the day. This goal should be what you wish to achieve with your students at the end of the day. By having a goal, you will be able to know how you should start your class as well as what you will be teaching for that day. This will also help you keep on track of your students' progress.

Prepare examples.

When you are teaching ESL, you need to be prepared with the questions that your students will ask from you. For example, if you tell them a word, you have to be prepared with its definition as well as an example on how that word should be used.

Have practice activities.

Prepare some writing tasks as well as vocabulary lessons which you can let your students take after you have discussed the day's lesson to them.

You will learn that if you come to class prepared, you will be an effective ESL teacher and your students will want you to stay with them.
