Do You Have What it Takes to Become a Teacher?
By:Jennifer Charleston

A teaching career is one of the most rewarding jobs one can have. In no other field of work will you have such a shaping influence on the lives of young people. Everyone has a different reason for becoming a teacher but they all have one thing in common - the desire to share knowledge and assist in the growth of children. Of course, teaching can also take place in university and adult classes but these professions are often called lecturers instead of teachers.

Teaching however is not an easy profession. Many people think that teaching young children such as kindergarten is simple as there is no academic knowledge involved, however this couldn't be further from the truth. As the teacher of very young children it is your responsibility to aid in their total development. Children must show marked improvement and development over a very short period of time during their first few years in school. As a teacher you have the privilege of participating in the emotional and intellectual maturing of other people.

Teachers are not the highest paid workers in society even though they are one of the most important. However money is rarely the motivating factor for a career in teaching. The average salary of a teacher varies widely between countries and states and even between cities and towns in the same state. Teachers in private school generally get paid more than public school teachers, but pressure is often higher in private schools which are often run as a business of sorts.

As a guide, the following salaries for certain states are considered the average:

Orlando, FL - $31,684
Chicago, IL - $53,713
Atlanta, GA - $35,903

If you choose to later become a vice principal or principal then your salary and responsibility will increase, but you will have less (or no) time in the classroom so that is a decision you must make at some point in your teaching career.

So what does it take to become a teacher? You will need to be comfortable speaking in front of groups of people as you will be doing that all day long. Next, you must have enthusiasm at all times. Your students and their parents expect you to be at your best day in, day out. Personal issues must never be allowed to get in the way of daily class activities and lessons. A teacher must always be the consummate professional. If you think you can handle that then you probably have what it takes to become a teacher!
